Ninox strenua (60 to 65 cm)

This very impressive and dark Powerful Owl with golden eyes is the largest in Australia. Previously recorded in Nungurner, but probably only vagrant due to lack of extensive undisturbed forest.

Powerful Owls roost by day in dense tree cover, sometimes clutching a dead possum or other large prey. They require extensive areas with mature hollow trees for breeding.

It's call is a low, measured “whoo-hoo”, with second note usually lower (male) or higher (female). Listed as “vulnerable” in Victoria.
