The Lesser Long Eared Bat is only one of around 12 species of microbats that you might find in Nungurner. As with other bats you are most likely to see this one at dusk as it emerges to feed.
It will flit and dart quickly between trees and over dams catching insects mid-air and eating “on the move”. A feast of up to 500 mosquitoes and other insects per hour is standard fare.
It roosts in tree hollows and crevices, under bark and even in rooves, unused roller doors and awnings.
During winter bats are slow to wake up and are easy prey for cats. So keeping cats inside at night will help protect them.
