(Solanum laciniatum)

A large shrub 4 metres high by 5 metres wide, this is a coloniser shrub that will pop up after clearing or disturbing an area. It is fast-growing and hardy in most soil types and conditions, except salt spray.

It is relatively shortlived with a life expectancy of 5-6 years in good conditions. The kangaroo apple makes a good screen plant, in the understorey of a wind break, or for bank and erosion stabilisation.

It will flower from September to March. The fruit turns from green, through yellow to orange and then bright red when ripe. Birds are attracted to the ripe fruit.
